Demand Accountability for ICE's Overreach and Protect First Amendment Rights

I am deeply concerned about the recent actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that threaten our fundamental First Amendment rights. ICE has subpoenaed Meta (Facebook) for personal information of Instagram users who document ICE raids, a clear attempt to intimidate and silence critics of the agency's practices.
This overreach is part of a broader pattern of targeting activists and expanding surveillance beyond ICE's mandate. The Trump administration's executive order declaring "Antifa" a domestic terrorist organization, coupled with a national security memorandum on "countering domestic terrorism," appears to be a thinly veiled attempt to suppress leftist movements and political dissent.
As your constituent, I urge you to take immediate action to protect our civil liberties. The right to document law enforcement activities, including those of ICE, is protected by the First Amendment. Civil liberties groups have rightly pointed out that revealing the identities of immigration agents engaged in public duties is constitutionally protected speech.
The abuse of administrative subpoenas by ICE to conduct general surveillance is particularly alarming. This practice goes far beyond the agency's mandate and sets a dangerous precedent for government overreach. We must not allow federal agencies to use their power to intimidate critics or stifle free speech.
I ask that you:
1. Initiate a congressional investigation into ICE's use of administrative subpoenas and its targeting of activists.
2. Introduce legislation to limit ICE's ability to conduct surveillance on U.S. citizens and legal residents, especially when exercising their First Amendment rights.
3. Call on social media companies like Meta to strengthen their policies to protect users from unconstitutional government demands for information.
The expansion of government surveillance and targeting of political dissent under the current administration poses a grave threat to our democracy. We must act now to safeguard our constitutional rights and hold ICE accountable for its actions. Our nation's commitment to free speech and the right to protest must not be compromised in the name of immigration enforcement.
I look forward to hearing about the specific steps you will take to address this urgent matter and protect the rights of all Americans.
