Demand Accountability for Detention of Legal Refugees

3 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I am writing to demand accountability regarding the Trump administration's sweeping order that could lead to the detention of thousands of legal refugees. This policy represents a dangerous departure from our nation's legal obligations and humanitarian commitments. Legal refugees have already undergone extensive vetting processes, often waiting years for approval. They have been granted lawful status to rebuild their lives in safety after fleeing persecution, violence, and war. Detaining individuals who have followed every legal requirement undermines the rule of law and violates their due process rights. This order creates chaos in communities across the country where refugees have established homes, found employment, and enrolled their children in schools. The economic impact alone is significant, as refugees contribute billions in taxes annually and fill critical workforce gaps in healthcare, agriculture, and manufacturing. Disrupting these lives harms not only the refugees themselves but also the employers and communities that depend on them. Beyond the practical concerns, this policy raises serious moral questions about who we are as a nation. Detaining people who have legal status sends a message that contradicts our stated values and damages America's standing in the world. It also sets a troubling precedent for how any administration might treat vulnerable populations. As Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem bears direct responsibility for implementing this order. I urge you to publicly demand that she provide a full accounting of how many people have been detained, the legal basis for each detention, the conditions of their confinement, and a timeline for resolution of their cases. Congress has oversight authority and must exercise it. I ask that you call for immediate hearings, request detailed reports from DHS, and work to halt this policy until proper legal review can occur. Legal refugees deserve protection, not detention.
