Defend Election Integrity from Federal Overreach

I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to protect the integrity of our election systems from federal interference. Recent events in Georgia demand a strong congressional response. FBI agents recently executed a warrant at a Fulton County, Georgia election office, seizing over 700 boxes of records related to the 2020 election, including computers and ballots. This action comes despite the fact that every investigation, count, recount, and audit has confirmed that claims of fraud in the 2020 election were false. What makes this particularly alarming is that President Trump previously wanted the Justice Department to seize voting infrastructure after 2020, but Attorney General William Barr refused due to lack of probable cause. Now, with different leadership at the Justice Department and FBI, such objections appear unlikely. Fulton County Commissioner Mo Ivory captured the gravity of this situation when she stated that "in America right now it does not even matter if what you are saying is the right thing. If our president wants to bring in the forces, he will." This represents a fundamental threat to the principle that elections are administered by states and localities, not controlled by the federal executive branch. This is not merely about relitigating 2020. These actions set a dangerous precedent for the 2026 and 2028 elections. When federal law enforcement can seize election records without credible evidence of wrongdoing, it creates a chilling effect on election officials and undermines public confidence in democratic processes. I urge you to introduce or support legislation that clearly defines and limits federal authority over state election infrastructure, requires probable cause based on credible evidence for any federal seizure of election materials, and protects state and local election officials from politically motivated federal interference. Our democracy depends on elections that are free from executive branch manipulation.
