I am writing to express my strong opposition to the SAVE Act (H.R. 22, S. 128), a bill that poses a significant threat to voter rights and will lead to widespread voter suppression. This legislation, currently heading to the Senate, will disenfranchise millions of American citizens, particularly women, low-income individuals, senior citizens, and people of color.
The requirements outlined in this bill, such as needing a passport and a birth certificate for in-person registration, are not only impractical but also discriminatory. Many citizens, especially those from low-income communities, face barriers in obtaining these documents. The costs associated with passports can be prohibitive, and the lengthy processing times can leave individuals without the ability to register to vote for extended periods.
Additionally, the elimination of online and mail-in registration will further exacerbate voter intimidation and suppression tactics, making it even harder for citizens to exercise their fundamental right to vote.
I urge you to stand against this bill and protect the voting rights of all Americans. Please do not support the SAVE Act, and advocate for accessible and fair voting practices for everyone.
This is a thinly veiled attempt to take away voting rights and voices from all but wealthy white men. You cannot endorse this bill without active ill will toward women, minorities, and everyone in between.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue — VOTE NO TO H. R.22!
