Jack Smith testified under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee this week, and what Republicans did with that hearing should alarm every American who believes in the rule of law. Senator Eric Schmitt accused Smith of perjury using what turned out to be fabricated evidence — he confused the Iowa Hawkeyes with the Atlanta Hawks — then went straight to right-wing media to celebrate the hit. No accountability. No correction. Just a propaganda clip built on a lie.
Meanwhile, Smith was unambiguous: two separate grand juries found proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Trump engaged in criminal activity, both in attempting to overturn the 2020 election and in illegally retaining classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. The only reason those cases were dropped is the DOJ's position that a sitting president cannot be prosecuted. That protection ends when his term does.
The case against Trump can be resumed. Support every effort to ensure it is. The rule of law cannot mean one thing for ordinary Americans and nothing at all for a president who, in Smith's own words, "engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results and prevent the lawful transfer of power."
