Urge Accountability for Dangerous Statements on Greenland and NATO

27 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

I am writing to express serious concern about recent statements made by Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos regarding Greenland and our international alliances. His remarks demand congressional oversight and accountability measures. At Davos, Trump stated regarding Greenland: "We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force where we would be, frankly, unstoppable. But I won't do that." Threatening military force against Denmark, a NATO ally since 1949, represents a fundamental betrayal of our security commitments and international law. Trump repeatedly confused Iceland with Greenland during his speech and falsely claimed the United States owned Greenland after World War II and "gave it back," which is historically inaccurate. According to Axios, Trump has negotiated with NATO Secretary Mark Rutte to make any new US establishments in Greenland American territory rather than operating under lease agreements. This approach treats national security as a real estate transaction rather than strategic partnership. Trump's explanation reveals his transactional worldview: "You need the ownership to defend it. You can't defend it on a lease." Trump's speech also contained demonstrably false claims that undermine American credibility abroad. He claimed his administration canceled 129 regulations for every new one implemented. He stated that Germany produces 22 percent less electricity than in 2017, which would cause widespread blackouts that have not occurred. He asserted major oil companies are investing in Venezuela days after Exxon-Mobil publicly called the country "un-investible." These statements damage America's standing with allies, create market instability, and demonstrate unfitness for office. I urge you to support measures that hold Trump accountable for threatening military action against allies, investigate his unauthorized negotiations regarding NATO arrangements, and ensure congressional oversight prevents unilateral actions that jeopardize our international relationships and national security.
