An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress

Demand Immediate Congressional Vote on Military Action Against Iran

7 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

I am writing to demand that Congress immediately reconvene to vote on whether to authorize continued military action against Iran following Operation Epic Fury. The Constitution explicitly grants Congress, not the president, the power to declare war. This fundamental principle of our democracy is being violated. On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran that killed at least 200 people, including 118 students from a girls' school, and wounded over 700. President Trump announced the operation from Mar-a-Lago, claiming the goal was preventing Iran from becoming nuclear-armed. However, hours later he told Washington Post reporters his real objective was regime change, calling on Iranian forces to face "certain death" and urging Iranians to "take over your government." This justification contradicts available intelligence. U.S. intelligence agencies assessed that Iran posed no imminent threat and would not threaten the U.S. mainland for at least ten years. The International Atomic Energy Agency found no evidence of active nuclear weapons plans. Despite this, the president unilaterally launched an act of war that also violates the UN Charter prohibiting attacks on other states. The American people oppose this action. Only 34% support the strikes while 44% oppose them. We did not elect a president to wage war without congressional authorization. The Founders deliberately rejected giving a single executive war-making authority precisely to prevent this scenario. Senator Andy Kim correctly warned that Trump is trying to "normalize war without Congress" and normalize presidential unilateral action on foreign policy. This cannot stand. I urge you to return to Washington immediately, convene hearings, and vote on whether to authorize continued military operations. Our constitutional system of checks and balances depends on Congress exercising its war powers authority. The American people deserve a voice in decisions that risk their lives and treasury.
