I urge you to support the Abolish Super PACs Act, S. 4602 and H.R. 2352, introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Summer Lee. This legislation is essential to restoring democracy and rebuilding public trust in our electoral system.
Since the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United, super PACs have helped create a two-tiered political system in which billionaires can exert extraordinary influence over which candidates remain viable and which policies receive attention. During the 2024 election cycle, dark-money groups spent $1.9 billion, while independent expenditure committees accounted for $2.7 billion in spending. When a single donor can outspend a candidate’s own campaign, our democracy is turned upside down. We are drifting toward a system of one dollar, one vote instead of one person, one vote.
The concentration of political power in the hands of wealthy donors is also destroying public confidence in government. Only 17 percent of Americans trust Washington to do what is right, and just 29 percent believe democracy is working. When voters conclude that billionaires matter more than their votes, they disengage. Lower participation makes elected officials even more dependent on mega-donors, and that dependence makes them less responsive to their constituents. This vicious cycle is eroding the foundation of representative government.
Some critics claim that this legislation would violate free speech. That argument is unpersuasive. The Supreme Court has consistently upheld reasonable limits on contributions to candidates and political committees, as well as the prohibition on foreign political spending. The Abolish Super PACs Act limits contributions to super PACs, not political expression itself. It protects the integrity of elections while preserving the right to speak, organize, and participate in public debate.
Other democracies demonstrate that strong campaign finance protections are compatible with vibrant, competitive elections. Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany maintain meaningful limits on political spending while protecting robust democratic participation. The United States does not have to choose between free speech and democratic equality. We need laws that bring our political system into line with those fundamental values.
Super PACs do more than influence election outcomes. They also shape which issues receive attention and which proposals are dismissed before voters ever have the opportunity to consider them. Universal health care, meaningful climate action, gun safety reforms, and other broadly supported policies often face powerful opposition when they threaten the interests of mega-donors. Meanwhile, tax cuts and other benefits for billionaires and large corporations can advance with comparatively little resistance. That is not government responding to the public. It is government responding to concentrated financial power.
Congress must act now to restore public confidence and reduce the grip of money on American politics. The Abolish Super PACs Act is a fair, constitutional, and necessary step toward ensuring that every voter, not just the wealthiest donors, has a meaningful voice in our democracy.
