An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Cruel and Illegal Deportations

31 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

I am writing to implore you to stand up to the illegal actions taken by this administration regarding the abduction and transportation of innocent people to a foreign country. On top of being illegal, this is cruelty. Plain and simple. Gaslighting the American people by claiming the 1798 Alien Enemies Act as justification for this cruelty is flat-out lying. Invoking this Act stipulates explicitly that war must be declared, and no war has been declared beyond what the President has erroneously proclaimed. He alone does not declare war, and Congress knows this. And yet, again, Congress stood by while these people were deported and ‘relocated’ (i.e., disappeared) without due process to a foreign country to be held in a notoriously violent prison without any possible chance of defending themselves. How is this sleazy business deal, not human trafficking? When our judicial system attempted to act appropriately and issued an order to return those people immediately, the administration ignored it and openly defied the court. More blatant illegality. Where is the outrage of the GOP? The American people are outraged, but our leaders aren’t. This action gives the president extraordinary scope to take power over immigration away from Congress by declaring any foreign country is invading the United States and thus making its citizens subject to deportation without going through the normal legal process. And yet, the GOP stands silent. Further, the despicable Steve Bannon openly defends the possibility that innocent people may have been taken, and he supports that. Outrage from Congress? Not a word. Open criticism of such cruelty from the GOP? Standing up to a bully takes courage, and the President is a bully. The GOP can’t even find the strength to stand up to a podcaster, so it stands to reason that they won’t stand up to a very powerful bully such as Trump. As hard as it will be to stand up against this illegality and cruelty, this is Congress's job. You were elected to do precisely this - fight for truth and justice, and you are failing. Your silence makes you complicit. You are guilty of the same cruelty as the President is, and it’s your fault. Stand up. Speak out against this dismantling of our judicial system and humanity. This is what you were elected to do.
