Defend the Rules-Based International Order That Has Kept America Safe

I am writing to urge you to publicly oppose President Trump's recent threats against Greenland and his broader dismantling of the international order that has prevented world wars for 75 years. As a constituent deeply concerned about the future my children will inherit, I cannot remain silent while our nation abandons the principles that have kept us safe and prosperous since 1945.
On January 19, 2026, President Trump sent a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre demanding control of Greenland and complaining about not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. This letter, distributed to European ambassadors, contained multiple factual errors corrected by journalist Anne Applebaum, including false claims about ending eight wars and contributing to NATO. More alarmingly, the letter represents a fundamental rejection of the rules-based international order established through the Atlantic Charter of 1941, the United Nations in 1945, and NATO in 1949.
Three top American Catholic cardinals, Blase Cupich of Chicago, Robert McElroy of Washington D.C., and Joseph Tobin of Newark, issued a joint statement warning that the Trump administration appears to embrace "might makes right" over the rule of law. Their concerns are validated by reports that Trump is launching a "Board of Peace" to potentially replace the UN, with a draft charter giving him veto power and control over $1 billion in member fees, with invitations sent to Vladimir Putin, Alexander Lukashenko, Viktor Orbán, and Javier Milei.
The situation has deteriorated to the point where Danish troops, who fought alongside American forces in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021, have arrived in Greenland to defend against the United States. This is not the world I want my children to inherit.
I urge you to speak out forcefully against these actions, introduce or support legislation reaffirming America's commitment to NATO and the UN, and work with colleagues across the aisle to constrain executive overreach that threatens our alliances and our children's security.
