I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge your opposition to HB 5 which allows permitless firearm possession. I believe these policies endanger public safety and undermine responsible gun ownership.
My concerns include:
Erosion of Training Requirements: I think anyone owning a gun should have as much training in owning and using it safely as a teenager has in owning/driving a car when they receive their drivers permit.
Increased Risk to Law Enforcement: Major law enforcement organizations oppose permitless carry due to difficulties identifying armed individuals during routine stops. This legislation would complicate officers' ability to distinguish lawful carriers from threats.
Weakened Public Safety: Permitless carry allows individuals with histories of violent misdemeanors, DUIs, or restraining orders to legally carry firearms. Tennessee's experience shows permitless carry exceptions for those with recent DUIs create dangerous loopholes.
I specifically request that you:
1) Oppose HB 5 and any similar legislation, like concealed carry reciprocity acts
2) Reject any legislation that nullifies training requirements
3) Support measures maintaining background checks for public carry
