Accountability Required in Greater Carolina Gift Scheme and Ethics Violations

I am writing to request transparency regarding your relationship with Greater Carolina, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has recently come under investigation by North Carolina law enforcement. On July 20, 2026, WRAL reported on a search warrant that outlined thousands of dollars in spending by Greater Carolina, allegedly used to provide gifts and entertainment to state lawmakers. The warrant specifically documented the following expenditures from 2022 to 2024: Kentucky bourbon country tours for Republican state lawmakers (2022 and 2024) $10,981.14 at Topgolf in Atlanta (August 2022) $26,454 combined on Carolina Panthers events (2023 and 2024) $26,602.84 for a weeklong vacation rental in Emerald Isle (June 2024) $11,868.80 to a gentleman's club near Tampa, Florida (August 2024) $3,260 to a gentleman's club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (August 2024) Four lobbyists have been criminally charged in connection with these activities, and the investigation is ongoing. Of particular concern: According to the State Ethics Act, legislators are required to disclose gifts over $200 in their statement of economic interest. Of the eleven legislators who attended the 2022 Kentucky trip and nine who attended the 2024 trip, only one disclosed the trip on their statement of economic interest: former state representative and current state Senator Tim Moffitt, R-Henderson. This raises serious questions about compliance with state ethics requirements. I respectfully request that you answer the following questions: Have you received any funding, gifts, meals, travel, entertainment, or other benefits from Greater Carolina, Inc. or its representatives? Did you participate in any of the Kentucky bourbon country tours organized by Greater Carolina in 2022 or 2024? Did you participate in any of the following Greater Carolina-funded activities: the Topgolf outing, Carolina Panthers events, the Emerald Isle vacation rental, or visits to establishments described as gentleman's clubs? What is the nature of your relationship with Greater Carolina and its leadership? If you did participate in any of these activities, why was the gift not disclosed on your statement of economic interest as required by the State Ethics Act? Do you support additional ethics reforms or increased transparency requirements for 501(c)(4) nonprofit organizations engaging in political activity? As your constituent, I believe accountability and transparency are essential to maintaining public trust in our state legislature. I appreciate your prompt response to these important questions.
