One FBI official called the whole episode "ultimately bullshit." Multiple current and former officials report that Patel has exhibited bouts of excessive drinking. He is reportedly obsessed with losing his job, and current FBI officials are waiting for word of his removal. The FBI requires steady, competent leadership, not someone who creates agency-wide panic over a password issue. The bureau cannot function effectively under a director who lacks the temperament and judgment this role demands.
