By not handing down a substantive sentence for felony convictions to Donald J. Trump between the time that the jury handed down the convictions and when Donald J. Trump was once again President-Elect - a time span of several months - Judge Merchan failed to use the law as a deterrent. Future abusers of the Constitution have nothing there to discourage them. If there is some way the Legislative Branch can exert their Checks and Balances power over judicial matters, especially since at the time of the felony convictions, Trump aspired to return to the Chief Executive position, that would be good - and refreshing.
