A Racist National Security Strategy—and Chilling Echoes of 1938

The Trump Regime has released a National Security Strategy that is not a strategy at all, but a racist, authoritarian manifesto—and the most dangerous official document issued by an American administration in generations. It openly embraces white supremacy, attacks our democratic allies, aligns with the Kremlin’s worldview, and lays the groundwork for domestic repression reminiscent of the autumn of 1938. The NSS warns that Europe faces “civilizational erasure” because several NATO countries may become “majority non-European.” This is not coded language. It is the Great Replacement conspiracy theory written into U.S. national policy. It applauds “patriotic European parties,” meaning extremist, neo-fascist movements like Germany’s AfD. It calls for the U.S. to “cultivate resistance” inside allied democracies—an explicit program for regime change in Europe. Trump’s hatred of Europe is ideological. Europe still clings to democratic norms—free expression, rule of law, pluralism—precisely the values MAGA is trying to destroy at home. And the NSS now redefines U.S. foreign policy around racial purity and “national identity,” rather than democratic alliances. The damage is already visible. The Kremlin publicly celebrated the NSS as aligned with Russia’s aims. Trump’s envoys have pushed Ukraine to cede territory without meaningful security guarantees, advancing Putin’s war goals. Allies have begun withholding intelligence because the U.S. can no longer be trusted. At home, the NSS cannot be separated from the mass-deportation campaign, troop deployments in American cities, the gutting of counterterrorism capacity, and the rise of ICE as a de facto national police force. Historians have warned that this moment resembles autumn 1938, when mass deportations produced an act of desperation that the Nazis exploited to justify a national pogrom and consolidate authoritarian power. We are witnessing the same pattern. After troops were deployed to American cities—labeled “war zones”—a traumatized refugee, failed by our immigration system, committed a horrific act. The Trump Regime immediately seized on the tragedy to escalate militarized crackdowns and blame entire communities. Scholars call this self-terrorism: provoking instability and then exploiting the resulting violence to entrench authoritarian rule. Meanwhile, Silicon Valley billionaires—who resent EU regulations on monopoly abuse, AI harms, and digital hate speech—have become Trump’s enforcers against Europe. The NSS reads as if co-authored by white supremacists, Steven Miller, and tech oligarchs who believe democracy is an obstacle to profit. This racist vision is not just immoral—it is strategically suicidal. By attacking Europe, Trump weakens the only alliance capable of balancing China, and he emboldens Russia, the “assassin on Europe’s doorstep.” He is choosing white supremacy over actual national security. Congress must treat this NSS for what it is: a blueprint for dismantling the democratic world America helped build after 1945, and a roadmap to authoritarianism at home. You must respond—with investigations, public hearings, funding restrictions, and unequivocal repudiation. We are not yet past the point of no return. But the echoes of 1938 are sounding. You cannot ignore them.
