I am writing as a constituent who often reaches out on policy matters, but today I want to share a broader concern about the tone of our public discourse.
It is critical that all lawmakers and public officials maintain a basic level of respect toward the citizenry and toward one another. When public communications or posts portray other human beings as apes or in ways that carry racist implications, it is demeaning not only to those targeted but also to the offices our representatives hold.
The American people look to our leaders to model respect for the basic dignity of humankind. Even in times of deep disagreement, maintaining that dignity and respect is essential to preventing further breakdown in our public discourse.
I hope you will use your position to set a tone of respect and humanity in public life.
