In March of this year Trump issued an executive order allegedly aimed at securing voting. A kink to the order is below. In it he declares that mail in ballots must be received by election day to be counted. That is not the case in at least 13 states. He seeks to reduce the number of military ballots received as well by altering the federal voter registration form. He has decided that voting machines are a risk and must be decertified and then be recertified in order to be used in federal elections. He demanded that everyone present a passport or birth certificate to register or change registration - much as the SAVE Act demands. Moreover, he has made clear that states’ noncompliance with his executive order will be grounds for withholding federal funds provided to states to support elections. But that’s not all. The Trump administration is using the facade of hunting down non-citizens registered to vote in federal elections as a means of accessing states’ voter registration rolls. These rolls can be combined with data from other databases to determine how best to gerrymander election districts to most favor Trump and his acolytes. This is underway already in Texas. Below is a link to the letter the Department of Justice sent to Alaska as a sample of their demands. Below is also a site where you can find links to all such DoJ letters sent to states so far. I strongly urge you to reject Trump’s attempt to take over our state’s voter rules and regulations and rolls. Do not give in to their demands in support of political gerrymandering, resist Trump’s threats to withhold funds and and sue to release those funds instead of capitulating to his threats. Our democracy needs every voter and every vote and I am counting on you to protect all of your constituents and their votes and our democracy.
