Demand Safe Return for Abrego Garcia

To: Sen. Tuberville, Rep. Rogers, Sen. Britt

From: A constituent in Auburn, AL

April 15

I am writing to express my deep concern and anger over the ongoing case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was unlawfully deported despite a court order prohibiting his removal. This is not only a tragic mistake with life-altering consequences for Mr. Abrego Garcia and his family—it is a serious violation of the rule of law in this country. A U.S. court explicitly ruled that he should not be deported due to the danger he would face upon return to El Salvador. And yet, that is exactly what happened. Now Mr. Abrego Garcia remains detained in inhumane conditions at a prison in El Salvador, in defiance of both legal precedent and a unanimous ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court. This is not how a democracy is supposed to function. The executive branch must not be allowed to override court decisions. If the United States government cannot—or will not—follow the law when it comes to deportation, what does that say about the strength of our institutions? This case has broader implications for all of us. If an administration can ignore a court order and deport someone anyway, what protections do any of us have? If a unanimous Supreme Court ruling is not enough to compel action, what kind of system are we living in? I call on you to: Demand the immediate and safe return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Hold those responsible for his unlawful deportation accountable. Publicly reaffirm your commitment to the rule of law and constitutional checks and balances. Please stand up for justice—not just for Mr. Abrego Garcia, but for all Americans who believe that no one is above the law.
