Protecting democracy through restoring constitutional checks and balances

To: Rep. Goldman, Sen. Schumer, Sen. Gillibrand

From: A constituent in New York, NY

March 25

It is deeply concerning that the administration is actively eroding democratic norms and constitutional safeguards that have underpinned our republic for over two centuries. The unilateral deportation of immigrants without due process, the erosion of judicial independence, the purging of factual information from government websites, and the expanding consolidation of executive power represent an existential threat to American democracy as we know it. These actions not only violate core constitutional principles, but they are part of a systematic campaign to rewrite history, undermine shared truth, and consolidate authoritarian control. Congress must act urgently to reassert its authority as a co-equal branch of government and defend the constitutional system of checks and balances. Specific legislative actions are needed to reinforce due process protections, uphold the rule of law, protect judicial independence, preserve public access to information and data, and restore the separation of powers. Failing to do so would enable this administration's alarming abuses of power and march toward autocracy to continue unabated. Protecting American democracy from this multifaceted assault is an existential imperative for preserving our freedom, human rights, and self-governance. Decisive congressional action to uphold the constitution's founding principles and democratic institutions is urgently needed before it is too late. The future of our republic hangs in the balance.
