I am writing to you today as a concerned citizen of Tennessee to express my profound alarm and condemnation regarding the recent United States Air Force airstrike on a migrant detention centre in Yemen, as reported by numerous international news sources. I urge you to use your platform and authority to demand a full, transparent, and independent investigation into this incident.
The reports and images emerging from this attack are horrifying. A facility holding migrants, who are among the world's most vulnerable populations, was struck, resulting in significant civilian casualties and injuries. Such an action, if confirmed, stands in direct contradiction to the values of human rights, justice, and the protection of innocent life that our state and nation claim to uphold.
As my elected representative in [Nashville / Washington D.C.], I call on you to:
1. Publicly condemn this attack and the loss of civilian life.
2. Demand a full and transparent investigation by the Department of Defense to determine the chain of command, the intelligence used to authorize the strike, and how such a tragic failure of safeguards occurred.
3. Support efforts in Congress to ensure robust oversight of U.S. military engagements abroad, with an emphasis on preventing civilian casualties and adhering to international humanitarian law.
The people of Tennessee, through their federal taxes, fund our nation's military. We have a right and a responsibility to demand that this power is used judiciously and in a manner that reflects our core American principles. When mistakes of this magnitude occur, there must be accountability, not silence.
I believe that leadership requires speaking out against injustice, regardless of the source. I implore you to take a stand on this critical matter of human dignity and national integrity. I look forward to your response outlining your position and the actions you intend to take.
