This heartbreaking tragedy at Apalachee High School underscores the urgent need for stronger gun safety measures. The shooting claimed the lives of two students and two teachers, leaving eight more students and a teacher injured. An AR platform-style weapon was used by the 14-year-old suspect in this senseless act of violence. While no laws can undo this devastating loss, we have a responsibility to take action to prevent future tragedies. Comprehensive gun reform, including an assault weapons ban, universal background checks, safe storage laws, and closing loopholes that enable access to firearms, can save lives. Students deserve to feel safe in their schools, not live in fear. Thoughts and prayers are not enough - we need courageous leadership and common-sense gun laws that prioritize public safety over narrow special interests. Inaction in the face of this epidemic of gun violence is unacceptable. I urge you to take decisive steps to protect our communities and uphold the will of the vast majority of Americans who support reasonable gun regulations. The time to act is now.
