The recent Israel strike on a UNIFIL convoy near Sidon, Lebanon, which injured 5 UN peacekeepers and killed 3 civilians, is a grave violation of international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Such actions deliberately endanger the lives of UN personnel working to maintain peace and stability in the region. This unacceptable attack undermines the important role UNIFIL plays and represents a blatant disregard for the safety of innocent civilians. Israel must be held accountable for this reckless act of violence against those tasked with monitoring the cessation of hostilities. The international community cannot allow these transgressions against UN peacekeeping missions to continue with impunity.
