The introduction of measures to restrict bathroom access for transgender individuals is an unwarranted attack on Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender person elected to Congress. Instead of bullying and discriminating against McBride before she has even been sworn in, our elected leaders should be focused on addressing the rising costs of housing, health care, childcare, and other pressing economic concerns that impact families across the country. Policies that marginalize the transgender community like McBride are rooted in prejudice, not facts, and have no place in a society that values equality and human dignity for all. We must reject these divisive tactics targeting McBride and urge our representatives to prioritize making the American dream more affordable and accessible through substantive legislation that improves people's lives. Perpetuating discrimination against McBride and the vulnerable transgender minority group is a step backwards, not the progress voters demand.
