American Detention or Death Camp? Congress Must Investigate Krome Now

To: Pres. Trump, Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick, Sen. Cruz, Rep. Dean, Rep. Moran, Sen. Hughes, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Kilgore, TX

March 23

I am writing with deep concern and urgency regarding the humanitarian crisis unfolding at the Krome Detention Center in Miami, which demands your immediate investigation and oversight. Recent reports indicate that over 4,000 individuals are being held in a facility designed for no more than 500. This level of overcrowding is not only dangerous—it is inhumane. Reports indicate that the conditions inside are reportedly dire: detainees are receiving only one cup of water per day, and food rations are severely limited. Three individuals have already died under these conditions. This is not a speculative fear—it is a grim reality. Among the deceased was a Ukrainian man who died of a brain hemorrhage after reportedly suffering seizures and vomiting. This was not an isolated case. Half of the deaths in ICE custody this fiscal year occurred at Krome. This is not just a question of policy—it is a matter of basic human decency. How can the United States, a nation that claims to lead on human rights, allow conditions that evoke haunting echoes of detention camps in Nazi Germany? That comparison is not made lightly. These are not prisoners of war. Many of these detainees are asylum seekers, parole recipients, and even legal residents with ongoing immigration cases. If any other country were reported to be treating migrants this way, we would condemn it. So I ask: why are we allowing this to happen on American soil? I urge you to: • Launch an immediate congressional investigation into the Krome Detention Center. • Demand transparency from ICE and DHS regarding detainee treatment, deaths, and overcrowding. • Ensure independent monitoring and improved medical care for all detainees. • Halt deportations to Krome until basic humanitarian standards are restored. History will judge how we treat the most vulnerable. I implore you not to wait until more lives are lost.
