As we approach the September 30 government funding deadline, I urge you to take decisive action to counter the growing authoritarian tendencies in our government. The current administration's unpopularity does not diminish its power, and it's crucial that we, as Democrats, use every tool at our disposal to safeguard our democracy.
The upcoming appropriations process presents a critical opportunity to exert pressure and demand accountability. While a government shutdown should be a last resort, we must seriously consider all options, including passing a full-year appropriations bill or another continuing resolution that includes strong safeguards against executive overreach.
I'm deeply concerned about the complicity in funding what some are calling an 'illegal authoritarian regime'. We cannot stand idly by as our democratic institutions are eroded. I commend the efforts of Democratic state attorneys general who are filing lawsuits to challenge unconstitutional actions, but we need a more comprehensive strategy.
The concept of 'uncooperative federalism' or 'soft secession', where blue states create parallel systems to circumvent harmful federal policies, is gaining traction. I urge you to explore and support these initiatives, leveraging the economic power of 'donor' blue states as a means to exert pressure on the administration and its enablers.
Time is of the essence. Every day we delay, we risk further entrenchment of authoritarian practices. I implore you to act swiftly and boldly. Coordinate with your colleagues to develop a unified strategy that goes beyond traditional partisan politics. Our democracy depends on your courage and decisive action in these unprecedented times.
Remember, history will judge us not just on our intentions, but on our willingness to stand firm in the face of threats to our democratic principles. Let's ensure we're on the right side of that judgment.
