remove the SOB Act from the Farm Bill

To: Sen. Sanders, Sen. Welch

From: A verified voter in Waterville, VT

May 5

I saw that the House recently passed a Farm Bill that included the “Save Our Bacon” provision, pushed in there by industry lobbyists, and then House leadership refused to take a vote on whether it should be removed, despite widespread opposition. Now it’s in the Senate’s court — and I hope you will oppose that provision, stripping it from the overall bill. I want to voice my strenuous opposition to the use of gestation crates for pigs, and more broadly my opposition to the inhumane treatment of livestock. There’s a reason that the industry has fought so hard to restrict access to “factory farms”! The way so many farm animals are treated is a moral abomination; it’s not just terrible for the animals, it’s also bad for the humans who eat them, and the ecosystems that surround such facilities. If it’s not possible to raise livestock for meat consumption in a humane, sustainable way, then *we should not be raising livestock for meat consumption*. I know, there are so many terrible things happening in the country today, it’s hard to know what to prioritize. But in terms of sheer suffering caused, the SOB Act ranks up at the top. Please oppose it.
