Invoke War Powers Resolution for Military Operations in Iran

To: Sen. Warnock, Sen. Ossoff, Rep. Jack

March 1

I am writing to urge you to invoke the War Powers Resolution and demand that President Trump seek congressional authorization for the ongoing military operations in Iran. The recent strikes that killed Iran's supreme leader and other high-ranking officials represent a significant escalation that has already resulted in American casualties: 3 U.S. service members killed and 5 seriously wounded, with additional personnel suffering minor injuries and concussions. President Trump has stated that military operations "continue unabated" despite reported openness to talks from potential new Iranian leadership. This ongoing military campaign against a sovereign nation, conducted without congressional approval, violates the constitutional requirement that Congress alone has the power to declare war. The War Powers Resolution exists precisely for situations like this, where the executive branch engages in sustained military action without legislative authorization. The intelligence operation that preceded these strikes involved months of CIA tracking of senior Iranian leaders, with information shared with Israeli officials. This level of planning demonstrates that these were not emergency defensive actions requiring immediate response, but rather a coordinated offensive campaign that should have been brought before Congress for debate and authorization. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has indicated that Iran possesses a "Decentralized Mosaic Defense" and will decide "when and how war will end." This suggests we are entering a protracted conflict with unpredictable consequences. American service members are now dying in operations that lack congressional approval, and the potential for further escalation is significant. I urge you to immediately invoke the War Powers Resolution, demand a full briefing on the scope and objectives of these operations, and require the President to seek congressional authorization or withdraw U.S. forces within the constitutionally mandated timeframe. Our service members deserve the full deliberation of Congress before being committed to war.
