Who Knew “History of the World, Part I” Was a Documentary?

To: Gov. Abbott, Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Moran, Sen. Cruz, Pres. Trump, Lt. Gov. Patrick, Rep. Dean, Sen. Hughes

From: A constituent in Kilgore, TX

March 21

In a scene meant to spoof Ancient Rome, Mel Brooks has a senator rise and ask, “Should we continue to build palaces for the rich—or should we house the homeless?” The chamber roars back: “F* the poor!”** We laughed. Because it was absurd. Because it was satire. Because it was ancient history. But here we are. Billions in tax breaks for billionaires. Endless debates about who deserves food, housing, or healthcare—while yachts get tax write-offs and corporate donors get invites to galas. Meanwhile, children sleep in cars and insulin is still rationed like it’s contraband. So we ask again—uncomfortably: “Should we house the poor, or build more palaces for the rich?” And we look to Congress. And we wait for the answer. So far, your silence sounds a lot like Mel Brooks’ punchline.
