Investigate HUD's handling of LGBTQ+ housing discrimination complaints and demand the records Rep. Ritchie Torres requested by November 1. HUD claims it cut its fair housing backlog by 27 percent, but the Government Accountability Office reported in October that it could not independently verify that number because HUD withheld information about its own process changes. That is not progress. That is a cover story.
What we do know is alarming. HUD's workforce shrank by 29 percent in 2025. Secretary Turner halted enforcement of the 2016 gender identity rule in February. ProPublica reported that HUD rejected an Arkansas gay man's complaint after Trump returned to office, telling him his allegations fell outside federal law. Torres put it plainly: "The Department's obligation is to enforce the law, not to redefine discrimination out of existence."
Housing is not a political reward. The Fair Housing Act applies to LGBTQ+ people, and HUD has no authority to quietly stop enforcing it. Support Torres's demand for monthly, regional data on sexual orientation and gender identity complaints since January 20, 2025, and push HUD to distinguish real closures from cases simply abandoned without investigation.
