As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to protect Medicaid and oppose any legislation, including the House-passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1), that would weaken this vital program. Medicaid is the backbone of our healthcare system, providing essential coverage to over 80 million Americans, including children, seniors, and people with disabilities.
I am deeply concerned about several proposed reforms that threaten the health and financial stability of our community:
• Oppose Funding Cuts: Reducing the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP) or cutting expansion funding would destabilize state budgets and leave millions without care.
• Protect Hospital Stability: Cuts to Medicaid jeopardize the financial viability of safety-net and children's hospitals, threatening the essential services they provide to our district.
• Reject Burdensome Barriers: Proposals like work requirements and stricter eligibility verification (such as address and citizenship documentation) create "red tape" that disproportionately harms vulnerable populations, including those experiencing homelessness. These hurdles often cause eligible people to lose coverage due to administrative hurdles, not a lack of need.
• Invest in Home-Based Care: Instead of restricting access, Congress should strengthen Home- and Community-Based Services (HCBS) to help seniors and those with disabilities live independently.
Medicaid is a lifeline for our most vulnerable neighbors and an economic driver for our state. I urge you to reject any proposal that reduces funding or restricts access to this critical program.
Thank you for your time and for your commitment to the health of our community.
