A majority of Americans have lost faith in the Supreme Court’s ability to act as a neutral arbiter of the law. Each session, the Court hands down decisions that are increasingly divorced from the values and viewpoints of the American people. Congress should restore public trust in the Court under the next pro-democracy President by creating 18-year term limits for current and future justices and giving each President two Supreme Court appointments during the first and third years of each term they are in office. A single justice who stays on the Supreme Court for decades can personally shape federal law for generations. It doesn't make sense to give enormous power to a few people for life. That’s why 49 out of 50 states—and every other major constitutional democracy in the world—have term limits, elections, or mandatory retirement ages for their highest courts. It’s time the federal government follows their lead, and Democrats in congress need to start building support for Supreme Court reform now to be ready to enact it in 2029. As a constituent, I am urging you to cosponsor the BATL Act, which would enact 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices. It’s time to restore trust in the highest court in our land.
