I understand the sensitive and complex nature of this issue, but I must respectfully express my opposition to H.R. 722. This bill would implement an absolute ban on abortion nationwide, denying women the fundamental right to make decisions about their own bodies and access critical reproductive healthcare services. Such an extreme measure fails to account for the many difficult situations women may face, including threats to their life or health, severe fetal abnormalities, or cases of rape or incest. It substitutes the government's judgment for that of women and their doctors. A woman's right to choose whether or not to continue a pregnancy is a deeply personal decision that should be made in consultation with her doctor, her family, and according to her own beliefs and circumstances - not mandated by the federal government. Abortion remains one of the safest medical procedures, and its legality has resulted in dramatic reductions in maternal mortality rates compared to when it was criminalized. Abortion bans put women's lives at risk. Furthermore, this bill would create a legal paradox by granting full constitutional personhood to fetuses from the moment of conception while failing to provide any exceptions for the life and health of the woman carrying that pregnancy. Women denied wanted abortions face increased risks of complications like hemorrhaging, sepsis, and death. Their existing children may suffer neglect as families struggle further. Doctors could face prosecution for providing legal, necessary care. Rather than pursuing this uncompromising position, I urge you to consider measures that improve access to reproductive healthcare, strengthen social safety nets for families, and respect the expertise of medical professionals on this complex issue. H.R. 722 would be an overreach of government authority into one of the most personal decisions a person can face. Please stand up for women's lives, health, and fundamental rights by opposing this misguided legislation.
