How Will History Remember You?

To: Rep. Rogers, Sen. Britt, Sen. Tuberville

From: A constituent in Auburn, AL

April 30

As a lifelong constituent of Alabama and someone who holds deep respect for our nation's founding principles, I write to you not in anger, but in anguish—and with a plea rooted in both moral conscience and constitutional fidelity. You have publicly declared yourself a God-fearing Christian, as have many of your colleagues. You invoke this identity when making decisions that impact millions of lives. And yet, I am increasingly troubled by the chasm between that professed faith and the actions—or inactions—of those who claim it while enabling harm, division, and lawlessness. The presidency is not above the Constitution. And yet, we have witnessed flagrant violations of its boundaries, particularly under former President Trump—violations that many lawmakers continue to excuse or justify. For your reflection and reconsideration, let me enumerate just a few of these infractions that undermine not just democratic norms, but the dignity of human life: Withholding funds appropriated by Congress, in clear defiance of legislative authority. Shuttering agencies or halting programs established by Congress, threatening services on which Americans rely. Violating federal protections for civil servants, creating a climate of fear and retaliation. Targeting private institutions for political speech—universities, law firms, and media outlets alike. Defying court orders, threatening the rule of law. Directing politically motivated prosecutions through the DOJ, IRS, and other federal agencies. Denying due process to migrants and citizens—treating them as less than human. Undermining habeas corpus, one of the oldest safeguards against tyranny. Imposing tariffs without proper congressional oversight, harming American businesses and consumers. Abandoning treaty obligations with no input from Congress, harming our credibility abroad. These violations alone would constitute a constitutional crisis. But what compounds the injury is the cruelty with which these actions were carried out: children separated from parents, marginalized communities scapegoated, truth itself mocked. This is not conservatism. This is not leadership. And it is certainly not the Gospel of Jesus Christ, who taught compassion for the stranger, integrity in governance, and justice for the oppressed. My question to you, Representative, is this: How do you reconcile your oath to the Constitution and your faith in Christ with your silence in the face of these abuses? I urge you to look beyond partisanship and consider the real cost of political compromise. The people of Alabama deserve better. We deserve representation that holds fast to truth, law, and love of neighbor. We deserve a leader who honors God not just with words, but with action. Do not let history record that when power eclipsed principle, you chose power. Stand up—for the Constitution, for the people you serve, and for the faith you proclaim.
