The United States made a promise to provide safe haven for the brave Afghan citizens who supported our mission in Afghanistan, putting their lives at risk. It is unconscionable to now terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghans residing in the U.S., leaving them vulnerable to deportation back to the brutal Taliban regime. The TPS designation for Afghanistan must be extended for at least 6 months given the ongoing upheaval, violence, and persecution Afghans would face upon return. Furthermore, the Afghan Adjustment Act or similar legislation must be passed to create a permanent pathway to status for Afghan allies who stood by America. Those still stuck abroad also need a renewed commitment, with more Special Immigrant Visas authorized and refugee admissions restarted to bring Afghan partners to safety. Abandoning our Afghan allies would be a stain on our nation's honor and values. Protecting those who helped the U.S. mission in Afghanistan is a moral imperative we must uphold.
