I’m writing as your constituent to express deep concern about the possible inclusion of the REINS Act in the upcoming budget reconciliation package. While I understand the desire for increased accountability, this proposal threatens to upend decades of essential public protections by giving Congress unprecedented power to retroactively veto major regulations crafted by expert agencies.
As someone who values both democratic oversight and the role of evidence-based policymaking, I’m alarmed by the sweeping implications of this bill. The REINS Act would make it dramatically harder to enforce environmental protections, food and drug safety, worker rights, and public health standards—simply by subjecting them to the partisan gridlock that already stalls so much necessary legislation.
I’m particularly troubled by the ability to repeal multiple regulations at once through a single resolution, which risks burying harmful rollbacks in procedural darkness. This undermines transparency and dilutes the accountability voters expect from our leaders.
We should be strengthening our regulatory frameworks to meet today’s challenges—not weakening them through maneuvers that sidestep public scrutiny. I urge you to oppose the REINS Act, whether in stand-alone legislation or as part of a reconciliation package. Our democracy works best when oversight is balanced, deliberate, and rooted in a shared commitment to the public good.
Please stand up for the integrity of our institutions and the protections that safeguard our communities.
