Uphold Supreme Court integrity through term limits, ethics rules

To: Rep. Bergman, Pres. Biden, Sen. Peters, Sen. Stabenow

From: A constituent in Traverse City, MI

July 29, 2024

The Supreme Court plays a vital role in upholding the Constitution and protecting the rights of all Americans. However, recent events have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, political bias, and eroding public trust in the Court's impartiality. To restore confidence in this crucial institution, I urge you to support establishing term limits and enforceable ethics rules for Supreme Court Justices. Lifetime appointments without term limits can lead to Justices serving for decades, increasing the likelihood of outdated perspectives that fail to reflect the evolving values of our society. Implementing term limits, such as an 18-year term as proposed by President Biden, would ensure a regular influx of fresh perspectives and promote a Court that better represents the diversity of the nation. Furthermore, the lack of a binding code of ethics for Supreme Court Justices has allowed concerning behavior, such as accepting gifts and engaging in political activities, which could undermine the Court's integrity and independence. Enforceable ethics rules would require Justices to disclose potential conflicts of interest, recuse themselves when appropriate, and maintain impartiality in both their professional and personal conduct. These reforms are essential to upholding the rule of law and preserving public trust in the Supreme Court's decisions. I urge you to prioritize legislation that establishes reasonable term limits and a comprehensive, enforceable code of ethics for Supreme Court Justices. The integrity of our nation's highest court must be protected for the sake of all Americans.
