President Trump's decision to enter a war with Iran was a war of choice, encouraged by Israel, without a realistic endgame or exit strategy. It was a mistake to assume Iran would simply capitulate or that military action alone could produce a lasting solution. We also undermined diplomacy when President Trump withdrew the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). While that agreement was not perfect and had flaws, it successfully constrained Iran's nuclear program and provided a framework for verification and negotiation. Today, we cannot even return to that level of agreement, and the diplomatic options available are more limited than they were before. Recent reporting indicates that additional American service members have been killed and many more wounded in Iranian attacks on U.S. forces and facilities located in allied countries. These losses underscore the human cost of a conflict that continues to expand without a clearly defined objective or exit strategy.
