Oppose the “Big Beautiful Bill” – Reject the Student Loan Reform Provision

I’m writing to urge you to reject the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” specifically the section proposing changes to student loan repayment plans. While the bill may be presented as comprehensive reform, the student loan provision is deeply flawed and financially harmful to millions of borrowers—including myself. As someone earning over $100,000 annually, it may appear on paper that I can comfortably afford 10% of my income toward student loan payments. That assumption is simply false. High earners in major metropolitan areas—especially in cities like New York—face disproportionately high costs of living. Between housing, healthcare, transportation, and taxes, the financial margin is razor-thin. Forcing a blanket 10% income repayment model underestimates these regional realities and punishes responsible borrowers who are already contributing meaningfully to the economy. This proposal ignores the nuanced struggles of middle-class professionals who have diligently paid their loans but remain burdened by interest accumulation and servicer mismanagement. True reform should prioritize affordability, fairness, and borrower protection—not arbitrary thresholds based solely on gross income. Please oppose this section of the bill. We need smarter, more equitable solutions—not sweeping mandates that penalize individuals who are doing their best to stay afloat.
