I am deeply concerned about recent statements from White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt suggesting that the United States may entirely cut off arms sales to Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. This position is not only strategically misguided but also contradicts the will of the American people, including those who support the current administration.
The assertion that we "cannot" indefinitely supply weapons to Ukraine sends a dangerous message to Russia, which encourages prolonging the conflict rather than negotiating peace. By indicating an end to our support, we embolden Russian aggression and undermining Ukraine's negotiating position. This approach does not align with the goal of ending the war; it removes the reasons for Russia to negotiate in good faith as they need only wait out our resolve.
Not only that, but we put hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk. Why would any country rely on us as a primary supplier when we will choose to cut off sales (not FREE aid) to them at a moment’s notice?
It's crucial to note that the majority of Americans, even among republican voters, support maintaining our commitments to Ukraine and NATO. A recent poll by The Vandenberg Coalition found that 83% of republican voters want to at least maintain American commitments in Europe, including to Ukraine and NATO. Only 16% support Russia's position on Ukraine making territorial concessions, and a mere 15% support fully ending assistance to Ukraine. These numbers clearly demonstrate that the American public understands the importance of supporting our allies and maintaining a strong stance against Russian aggression.
While I appreciate the President’s goal of ending the war and stopping the killings, withdrawing support from Ukraine is not the path to achieve this.
I urge you to advocate for maintaining and potentially increasing our support for Ukraine. This includes continuing to supply necessary defensive weapons and maintaining economic sanctions against Russia until they cease their aggression. By standing firm with our allies, we send a clear message that the United States remains committed to global security and the sovereignty of nations.
The stakes are too high to waver in our support. Our actions now will have long-lasting implications for global security and American leadership. Let's ensure that our policy reflects both our values and the will of the American people.
