As a constituent and a dedicated school social worker, I am writing to express my unequivocal opposition to the cuts to school mental health grants under the Trump administration. These cuts are not only short-sighted—they are dangerous.
In my role, I provide direct mental health services to students and serve on my district’s threat assessment team. The work we do is vital to the safety and well-being of our schools. Every day, I see the critical need for early intervention and sustained support for students experiencing mental health challenges. These grants have allowed us to expand our services, reduce student crises, and help prevent tragedies before they occur.
Stripping schools of these resources undermines our ability to support struggling students, intervene in potential threats, and foster safe, healthy learning environments. We are already stretched thin. Cutting funding now will directly endanger the lives and futures of our youth.
Mental health is not optional. It is a cornerstone of school safety and student success. I urge you to reject these harmful cuts and instead advocate for increased investment in school-based mental health services. Our students, our educators, and our communities deserve nothing less.
