Pennsylvania needs strong restrictions on automated license plate readers now. These cameras don't just catch criminals — they build a permanent map of where every driver goes, including medical appointments, places of worship, and political events. That data gets shared across agencies in dozens of states, accessed by ICE, and has already been used to investigate a woman suspected of having an abortion. Support legislation to restrict ALPR data collection, retention, and sharing. This isn't a fringe position. Governor Shapiro called the technology "not something in the public interest." Republican gubernatorial candidate Stacy Garrity supports a ban. Lawmakers from both parties have introduced at least nine bills this session. The ACLU, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and civil liberties advocates across the country are sounding the alarm. Sixteen states already have restrictions on the books — Pennsylvania should join them before this surveillance network grows any larger.
