Congress Must Stop the President From Destroying Our Alliances

To: Sen. Ossoff, Sen. Warnock, Rep. McCormick

From: A verified voter in Alpharetta, GA

March 18

Congress needs to immediately reassert its constitutional authority over foreign policy and trade before the president's erratic actions permanently destroy our alliances and national security. In 14 months, the president has systematically alienated every major ally. He told European officials in January 2020 that if Europe is under attack, we will never help them. He imposed random tariffs on Europe, the UK, Japan, and South Korea, then changed Swiss tariffs based on personal gifts including a gold bar and Rolex. He ridiculed Canada, threatened Denmark with invasion over Greenland, and insulted British troops who died fighting for us after NATO invoked Article 5. His lies about Ukraine aid, claiming $300 billion when the real figure is closer to $50 billion over three years, have given Putin renewed hope of victory. As Anne Applebaum documented in The Atlantic, the consequences are devastating. The damage is here. Canada refuses to participate in offensive operations with us. Germany says this is not their war. Spain blocked use of bases. Our closest allies now calculate that any help they provide will be forgotten within days. Congress has the power to block tariffs, restrict military action, and demand accountability for trade negotiations conducted alongside family business deals. Use it now before we have no allies left.
