Donald Trump’s decision to demolish parts of the White House to construct a lavish, $330 million donor-funded ballroom—while accepting contributions from corporations holding government contracts or facing (or having had suspended) federal enforcement actions under his administration—stands as a striking example of corruption.
Congress should, at every opportunity, demand hearings or use existing oversight sessions to press for transparency regarding this project. Lawmakers must seek to uncover the identities of all donors to the White House ballroom, the amounts contributed, how regulatory safeguards were bypassed, the project’s historical and environmental impact, the methods used to solicit funds (and any promises or conditions attached), the true costs of demolition and upkeep, and the procedures governing bidding and contracting.
