Uphold Ukraine's sovereignty, seek negotiated peace through principled diplomacy

To: Rep. Jayapal, Pres. Trump, Sen. Cantwell, Sen. Murray

From: A constituent in Seattle, WA

August 11

I fully understand the concerns about rewarding aggression, as history has shown the disastrous consequences of appeasing authoritarian regimes through territorial concessions. It is critical that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine be respected and that Russia is not granted any illegitimate gains from its unjustified invasion. At the same time, a negotiated settlement to end the immense suffering and loss of life is imperative. Any peace agreement must involve Ukraine as an equal partner and uphold its right to self-determination without Russian interference. Putin's demands for Ukraine to cede territory, abandon its NATO aspirations, or accept Russian control are unacceptable violations of its sovereignty. A just resolution can only be achieved through principled diplomacy that reasserts international norms against wars of conquest. Territorial rewards for aggression would not only betray Ukrainian sacrifices, but encourage future conflicts by emboldening revisionist powers. While difficult compromises may be required, firmness in defending Ukraine's territorial integrity and freedom to choose its alliances is essential to deterring further escalation by Russia. Ultimately, a sustainable peace requires accountability for Russia's crimes and credible security guarantees for Ukraine's future. Territorial concessions to the invading force must be firmly rejected as contrary to the rules-based international order. I urge unwavering support for Ukraine's right to determine its own future free from external coercion or dismemberment.
