I am writing to urge you to support legislation and policy that mandates full interoperability and real-time data sharing between all electronic medical record (EMR) systems, including Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth, ModMed, and others.
As a patient navigating care between multiple providers and health systems, I’ve personally experienced the frustration, delays, and risks caused by fragmented health records. Despite the existence of technologies like Carequality and CommonWell, many providers still operate on isolated systems that do not communicate with each other — even within the same city or specialty.
This lack of coordination results in:
• Repetitive tests and imaging
• Medication errors and missed allergies
• Inefficient care transitions
• Greater burden on patients to manually share records
• Increased costs to the system as a whole
True continuity of care depends on seamless, automatic, and universal data exchange. If financial institutions and phone carriers can securely share data across platforms, our healthcare system should be held to an even higher standard.
Please work to support or introduce legislation that:
1 Requires universal interoperability standards across all certified EMRs.
2 Enforces real-time record sharing with patient consent, regardless of vendor.
3 Penalizes vendors and providers who block information under the guise of "technical limitations."
4 Incentivizes small practices to join health information exchanges.
Patients deserve a system where our care follows us, not where we have to chase it down.
Thank you for your leadership on this critical issue.
