Preserve U.S.-funded contraceptives, prioritize reproductive health rights

To: Pres. Trump, Sen. Cantwell, Rep. Jayapal, Sen. Murray

From: A constituent in Seattle, WA

July 23

The pending destruction of nearly $10 million worth of U.S.-funded contraceptives is an alarming and unnecessary waste of vital resources. These contraceptives, currently warehoused in Belgium, have the potential to prevent countless unplanned pregnancies and unsafe abortions in nations where access to reproductive healthcare is limited. Instead of incinerating them, we urge the U.S. government to reconsider donating or selling these supplies to organizations like the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and MSI Reproductive Choices, both of which have expressed interest in acquiring them. Denying these offers and choosing incineration not only squanders taxpayer funds but also undermines efforts to promote sexual and reproductive health globally. The contraceptives in question have a lengthy remaining shelf life, with expiration dates ranging from 2027 to 2031. Destroying them prematurely contradicts principles of sustainability and human rights. We understand the complexities surrounding the Mexico City policy, but there are practical solutions available. The supplies could be repackaged without USAID branding, alleviating concerns about violating the policy's restrictions. NGOs have even offered to bear the costs of repackaging and shipping. Prioritizing ideology over pragmatism will only exacerbate the already dire shortage of contraceptives in developing nations, leading to increased rates of unintended pregnancy, maternal mortality, and other preventable health crises. We implore you to reevaluate this decision and explore alternatives that preserve these life-saving resources while upholding the fundamental right to reproductive autonomy. Incineration should be an absolute last resort, especially when viable solutions have been proposed. The global implications of this action demand a more thoughtful and ethical approach.
