The removal of the Department of Education's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policy will have substantial adverse consequences for students with disabilities and their families. A robust DEI policy is essential to ensure equal access to educational opportunities and resources for all students, regardless of their abilities or backgrounds. Eliminating DEI initiatives undermines the principles of diversity, which promotes the inclusion of individuals from varied backgrounds, including those with disabilities who were historically denied the right to a public education. It disregards the principle of equity, which recognizes that students with disabilities often require additional support and accommodations to achieve academic success on par with their neurotypical peers. Furthermore, it threatens the principle of inclusion, as individuals with disabilities continue to face barriers in accessing opportunities and resources in their communities, workplaces, and schools. The decision to dissolve DEI programs and initiatives reflects a concerning disregard for the unique challenges faced by students with disabilities and their families. It jeopardizes the hard-won progress made in ensuring equitable access to education and risks perpetuating the marginalization and exclusion of this vulnerable group. We urge you to reconsider this misguided policy shift and reinstate a comprehensive DEI framework that promotes diversity, fosters equity, and facilitates the full inclusion of students with disabilities in the educational system. By doing so, you can uphold the fundamental principles of fairness, equal opportunity, and the right to a quality education for all students, regardless of their abilities or backgrounds.
