House Oversight of Elon Musk's Sweeping Federal Changes Needed

To: Sen. Blackburn, Sen. Hagerty, Rep. Green

From: A constituent in Franklin, TN

February 6

The request to bring Elon Musk before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is reasonable given his central role in leading the Trump administration's "government efficiency" efforts. As an unelected individual, Musk wields significant influence over federal agencies and their operations. Oversight and accountability are crucial to ensure transparency and prevent potential abuses of power. Musk and his teams have caused widespread disruption across the federal government, dismantling programs, pushing workers to resign, compromising sensitive data, and operating with little to no congressional review. This brazen attempt to remake the executive branch demands rigorous congressional oversight. While Republicans currently oppose compelling Musk's testimony, they should reconsider this stance in the interest of protecting the system of checks and balances. The administration's actions amount to an unprecedented consolidation of power in the hands of an unelected private citizen. Allowing Musk to evade congressional scrutiny would further erode the role of the legislative branch and democratic norms. The oversight committee has a duty to exercise its authority and subpoena Musk to answer questions about the scale, scope and legal justification for the sweeping changes he is directing across federal agencies.
