The recent introduction of a measure to ban transgender individuals from using bathrooms aligning with their gender identity at the U.S. Capitol is both misguided and disrespectful. At a time when we should be focusing on substantive issues that improve the lives of all Americans, manufacturing divisive culture wars only serves to marginalize an already vulnerable community. Transgender people deserve the same dignity, respect, and access as anyone else. Attempts to legislate discrimination have no place in our democracy. We must reject hate and instead work towards fostering an inclusive society where every person is treated equally under the law, regardless of gender identity or expression. Members of Congress have a responsibility to uplift and protect the rights of all their colleagues and constituents, not target them for simply being who they are. I urge you to stand on the right side of history by denouncing this harmful proposal and reaffirming your commitment to equality.
