I urge you to reconsider the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act. While the goal of supporting Americans held hostage abroad is laudable, the provision terminating the tax-exempt status of organizations designated as providing material support to terrorist groups sets a concerning precedent. Many non-profit organizations operate in conflict zones and crisis areas, providing vital humanitarian aid and services. Inadvertently cutting off their funding risks exacerbating suffering and instability. There are existing laws to address material support to terrorists; additional measures could have unintended consequences impeding lawful relief efforts aiding vulnerable populations globally. I encourage exploring alternative approaches that uphold American values while avoiding potential harm to important charitable work.
